ABOUT
Born in South Korea, I grew up in an artistic family that included an actor and designer. I graduated from Hong Ick University in Seoul, Korea with a BFA Degree in Sculpture.
I exhibit regularly in galleries in Los Angeles and Korea where I have won a number of competitions. I was selected to display my work in the Asian American artists exhibit sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation and the UCLA Asian American Studies Center.
I came to the United States as a freelance stage director in 1972. I married Craig Simmons in 1977 and have two daughters, Saehee and Jihae, who both studied art in the UK. My husband is also an artist and designer. I currently work as an artist and art instructor.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I am opposed to the materialism and artificiality of modern society that is created by technological development, I seek a purity of the human spirit, an essential quality of life. I admire ancient societies in which things were thought to be permeated by spirit and people communicated and interacted with the spiritual world.
I have been collecting miscellaneous things, that have a beauty and spirit of their own, for many years. Through minimal reshaping of these objects and organizing them into my own compositions, I create sculptures and assemblages that incorporate the uniqueness of the original objects, yet recombine them in ways that transcend the limits of their original form.
